Our worship music for this Sunday was led by a jazz ensemble directed by Jonathan Ailabouni currently serving at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he directs the Jazz Band and Luther jazz combo program. Jazz music, which is heavily influenced by the blues, is the perfect idiom to use for expressing Psalms of Lament. Pastor Sara has Jonathan demonstrate some of the unique characteristics of the jazz style.
On this day in worship we had 4 scripture lessons. In addition to the Acts 2 reading which describes the events that took place on the day of Pentecost, we also included the Genesis reading from chapter 11 about the tower of Babel. Pastor Sara offered a brief reflection after the Gospel reading which is first on the recording. At the 3 min point in the recording, you will hear Pastor Charisse offer a reflection after the Romans passages cited.
Weekend worship for this date was a single combined communion service in our multi-purpose room to celebrate the close of our "Year of Transformation" initiative. Afterward, Atonement members sorted and packed over 200 boxes of food for community pantries. To see photos from this event simply click here.
