First things first . . .
Before you jump to the pathways to growth, we encourage you to take an online Spiritual Health Assessment if you have not already completed one. At Atonement our mission is to Love and Serve with Jesus. We equip people to do this by introducing them to Jesus and his teachings wherever they are on their faith journey. We have identified six pathways toward increasing your spiritual health. We believe that followers of Jesus grow spiritually through… Worship, Life Together, Generosity, Spiritual Practices, Biblical Engagement, and Serving Others.
What is a Spiritual Health Assessment?
The assessment is a tool that has been developed to help you assess areas for spiritual growth. The questions are simple and address each of the six areas listed above. By the end of the assessment, you will have the information you need to take a next step on your faith journey.
2 Corinthians 13:5 tells us to, Test ourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. Test it out…if you fail the test, do something about it. This assessment tool is designed to help you do just that!
How Do I Take It?
The assessment consists of thirty questions and should take about ten minutes to complete. Answer each question honestly, as it applies to you. The goal of this assessment is to provide you with a customized glimpse of areas for potential growth and to give you the resources you need to take a next step on your faith journey.
To begin, enter your name and email address at the top. When you are done, your results will be emailed back to you so you may have a copy to measure your progress the next time to take it. Then read the instructions that describe how to record your responses. The chart assigns a numerical value of 1 to 5 to the statements that will be used to gauge your responses. Next, read through the statements listed on each page for the six disciplines. At the end of each statement, fill in the blank with the number that corresponds to the comment that best describes your reaction. When you come to a statement you don’t understand, score a number one.
Remember, the assessment is not designed to compare you with others. It is simply to provide you with customized resources to help you on your journey as you grow in love for God and others.
Pathways to Growth – What’s Next For You?
Now that you have completed your Spiritual Assessment take your total scores and plot them in the appropriate section of the Spiritual Health Wheel shown to the right. Click on the diagram to download a pdf document you can print or use the copy furnished in the spiritual Health pamphlet, if you have one.. The diagram shows how you’re doing in these important areas of spiritual life and will help you gauge where you are on your faith journey.
In order to grow in faith, consider which of these pathways may be best for you to be able to take some steps toward spiritual maturity and ‘loving like Jesus.’
Worship is the center of our spiritual life. Worship brings us all together to grow in understanding and practice of how we ‘love and serve with Jesus.’ Worship allows us the safe space to practice our faith.
Faith grows when we experience the love and grace of God with and through other people. Growth happens in this area when we develop friendships where we feel comfortable talking about faith and encouraging one another in our faith journey.
‘Loving one another’ as Jesus teaches means investing in one another. We invest time and energy in building friendships and community. We make financial investment in the community in order to support the work of God in our own church, the Chicago area and the world.
Faith grows when we do our own work. In Sunday worship, we learn and practice praying, reflecting on scripture, sharing God’s peace, and being a loving community like Jesus. Growth in this area happens when we take what we learn on Sunday into daily prayer and devotions on our own.
Growing in knowledge and understanding of the Bible and theology is important – Faith grows when things make sense. Growth in this area will happen through attending worship, Bible studies and other educational opportunities.
Faith should make a real difference in the world—faith should have action. Each of us is uniquely gifted to serve in Jesus’ name and our faith will grow when we serve. It may be serving in worship through our gifts of music, reading, or serving with altar care. Or it may be going on a mission trip or helping to lead a food or clothing drive.
